Bluetooth 6 Announced: Faster Device Tracking, Smarter Connections, and Enhanced Security
The next generation of Bluetooth is here, and it’s bringing some impressive upgrades! The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has unveiled Bluetooth 6, introducing major new features that promise to enhance everything from tracking lost devices to improving connections between smartphones, smart home gadgets, and even car keys.
One of the standout features of Bluetooth 6 is Channel Sounding, a new capability that allows Bluetooth to determine the exact distance between two devices, much like echolocation. This feature will vastly improve the accuracy of tracking devices like AirTags and other Bluetooth-enabled trackers, bringing them closer to the precision of Apple’s Ultra Wideband technology.
Bluetooth 6 also aims to make smart locks, digital car keys, and similar devices more secure. With distance-based unlocking, your device will only trigger actions when it’s in close range, adding an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.
Additionally, this update optimizes Bluetooth peripherals like keyboards, game controllers, and wearables to prevent unnecessary battery drain by automatically adjusting their active states based on proximity.
While no Bluetooth 6 devices are yet on the market, manufacturers are expected to begin incorporating this new technology into smartphones and other devices within the next few years—potentially as soon as the iPhone 17 in 2025.
With features that boost security, enhance convenience, and improve device tracking, Bluetooth 6 is shaping up to be the most exciting update to the technology in years. Stay tuned as it begins to roll out across devices!
