Union Boss Letter: “Obamacare Is Killing Us”

Letter penned by James P. Hoffa and union bosses: Obamacare will “shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40-hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.”

Union Boss Letter: “Obamacare Is Killing Us”This story is getting a lot of play in the conservative blogs I follow but I haven’t seen much ‘mainstream’ coverage unless you count the Wall Street Journal where the union letter to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid appeared a few days ago.

When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class. Like millions of other Americans, our members are front-line workers in the American economy. We have been strong supporters of the notion that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care. We have also been strong supporters of you. In campaign after campaign we have put boots on the ground, gone door-to-door to get out the vote, run phone banks and raised money to secure this vision. Now this vision has come back to haunt us.

Since the ACA was enacted, we have been bringing our deep concerns to the Administration, seeking reasonable regulatory interpretations to the statute that would help prevent the destruction of non-profit health plans. As you both know first-hand, our persuasive arguments have been disregarded and met with a stone wall by the White House and the pertinent agencies. This is especially stinging because other stakeholders have repeatedly received successful interpretations for their respective grievances. Most disconcerting of course is last week’s huge accommodation for the employer community—extending the statutorily mandated “December 31, 2013” deadline for the employer mandate and penalties.

Time is running out: Congress wrote this law; we voted for you. We have a problem; you need to fix it. The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios.

    Big surprise the liars lied! The unions finally realized who they jumped into bed with, welcome to the real world.

    Isn’t everyone happy they passed it before we knew what was in it?

    Can’t wait for immigration reform, 11,000,000 more legal people put into 7.5% unemployment. How are the unions going to spin that one to their members?

    “We must pass the bill to see what’s in it”. Nancy Pelosi D, House leader who passed this abomination bill against the wishes of the people of this nation. Now the Unions who keep these ID10T’s in office are complaining their chickens are coming home to roost. Jimmy and crew you got what you elected and deserve. The rest of us are going to suffer for it too. Thanks. BTW, the goal of ACA is to destroy the US Health Care System so the government can then take over the entire system. If you think Social Security sucks wait to you see cradle to grave 100% government health care. There is a reason why congress is exempt from the laws they pass. Bottom line who or what you elect does matter.

    Dear Mr. President: Your affordable healthcare act is about to ruin my life. I have been so fortunate to have an employer that pays 100% of my premiums for medical, dental, and vision. Now I am told that in 2014, the cost of those premiums paid by my company are going to be added to my W-2 and I will be liable for taxes on it. Although I have not had a raise, my taxes will increase astronomically! I am not happy. It would almost be better for me to quit my job and go live on welfare and get some free healthcare like so many undocumented immigrants are doing. This is BS and I am very upset about it.

    First, I kind of read the letter as a qui-pro quo for their support. Second Congress makes and fixes the law and try getting this congress to pass anything for President to sign (except maybe when it affects their travel plans). Second, Susan, the PPACA doesn’t make your 100% employer paid healthcare plans taxable, it simply puts the costs on your W2 so you know what your employer pays for healthcare. “Free” healthcare is always to available to anyone without a job, have at it if you thing that is better. Tired of all the talk, it’s time for Congress, the President, citizens and businesses to implement it or fix it. At some point I hope heatlhcare becomes and individual choice and not something you get from an employer.

      Putting the amount on our w-2 forms may be for “informational purposes only” at this point but it is merely setting the stage for certain plans to be taxable in the near future.

      Did anyone really believe that they were just doing something kind by providing information to everyone about what the actual costs are for their insurance coverage? Seriously?

    I hate to tell you this but the ACA has put a bullet in the back of your Union head. This is the end of Unions in America. This law is going into effect without any changes. The Republicans want this monstrocity as much as the Democrats because they are all Progressives. You can’t have Unions in a Progressive Society where everyone is equil.
