The Portuguese job economy is changing, and not for the good of young people entering the workforce.
I’m not sure that things were better a generation ago, but they seemed so. Back in the day, my bohemian student and programming-grunt days, I’d get to Portugal usually by train from Madrid and quickly find myself on the beaches of Estoril, dining on Red Snapper, drinking Porto, and paying a scant $5/night for a bed at a nearby pensione. The people there seemed happy, calm, engaged.
Today the situation is quite different. The European Union with its high taxes has choked a lot of the life out of countries like Greece and Portugal, not unlike what our federal government has been doing with its vast expansion during the last 20 years.
