Most of the posts here on the pages of Staffing Talk have to do with hiring people, not firing them. And that is as it should be. But when a member of the editorial staff at this fine site sent me a survey about the Top 10 reasons companies fire people, I thought I would share it. As for the source, we found the write-through on Hub Pages, but their source wasn’t credited. Crazy bloggers.

Speaking of crazy, before I get started on the list, I want to share a funny little story. After I posted the headline and wrote the first paragraph, I did a Google image search of “You’re Fired” to see what was available. Of course, there were the usual Donald Trump pictures featuring his colossal combover and pointing finger. But then I saw a very amateurish stick figure drawing that came from a Chicago law firm’s blog. I did a double take and realized it was a drawing I made myself for Staffing Talk last year. Oh, well, I’m sure I ripped a photo off before. Once anyway. I never dreamed there would be a day when my art work would be in demand though. Take that Mrs. Vail, my 6th grade art teacher who told me I didn’t have a shred of artistic talent.

So anyway, let’s going going with the list, best ways to get fired.

1) Dishonesty

This one is kind of a no brainer, even though it tops the list. Of course if you lie to your boss, share proprietary company information, fudge or fake time sheets or expense reports and the like, this is always potential grounds for firing.

Add some social media wrinkles to this one though now. Doing things like tweeting/blogging/sharing disparaging things about your boss, co-workers and/or company can get you in trouble, as can taking a sick day and then posting Facebook pictures of yourself tubing at your friend’s lake cabin. That last one is hypothetical by the way.

2) Lying on a resume

As you well know, increasing numbers of employers are checking every single reference a job candidate provides, although EEO regulations make this more difficult to complete in recent years. Many employers, including staffing agencies, require a candidate provide copies of high school, vocational school, and/or college transcripts and diplomas, as well as certifications and licenses when applicable.

Some employers are even running regularly credit checks on workers. Vendors who can perform bulk credit and background checks make this cheaper to accomplish these days.

3) Refusing to follow directions and orders

This is another one in the no brainer and self explanatory categories. Employers are paying a worker to be there, performing certain duties and functions. If the worker is unwilling or unable to perform those functions, there is going to be a problem. And probably a dismissal.

4) Too much personal stuff at work

Companies consider computers, telephones and so forth to be their property, and using, or misusing, company property on a continual basis for your personal stuff is frowned upon. Endless surfing on the web, engaging in social media sites, excessive chit chat with coworkers is also a waste of company time and could get you fired.

Companies consider computers, telephones and so forth to be their property, and using, or misusing, company property on a continual basis for your personal stuff is frowned upon. Endless surfing on the web, engaging in social media sites, excessive chit chat with coworkers is also a waste of company time and could get you fired.

5) Inconsistency

We all have bad days, right? That won’t get you fired. Usually. But if your productivity and moods are swinging all over the place in a pendulum-like fashion, that could put you in another category. The fireable kind. This is often the kind of thing that can be addressed in a regular performance review. If you are an employer, you should be conducting them regularly. There are too many tools available today not to. No excuses. And if you are an employee, you should be receiving reviews on an annual, or even more frequent basis.

6) Inability to get along with others

Can’t we all just get along?! Seems like an easy enough ask, but as we all know, the workplace environment is not always a perfectly harmonious one. Isn’t it great to be the person about whom others others say, “They get along with everybody.” Conversely, the lack of an ability to play well with others can derail your career and advancement opportunities.

7) Can’t do the work

With more and more people desperate for work these days, by the time someone reaches the actual serious interview stage, it’s quite possible they might not answer honestly to specific questions about their skills and experience. For jobs that require certification and/or licenses, this scenario won’t happen. But for less technical or more general positions, it’s possible an employer – or even the employee – may not know someone’s true ability to perform work until they are actually on the job. If someone is hired and shown they simply can’t do the job, they will likely be let go. It’s like a blind date, the true you will emerge eventually, you may as well be honest from the start. On both sides for that matter.

 Too slow to adapt

With more and more generations in the workplace than at any time in our history perhaps, a willingness and ability to adapt to different work styles, communication methods, motivations, etc., is essential for success. No doubt we have all seen situations where change is instituted by a new boss, perhaps a younger or less experienced one, and that change is resisted by long-tenured or more experienced employees. With the pace of change in the workplace today, we all must be highly adaptable and willing to evolve.

9) High absenteeism rate

I have a very diligent, serial entrepreneur friend who when discussing the correlation between persistence and success, often talks about the importance of simply “showing up.” Of course, not showing up for work carries with it consequences, which may include firing. With many employers aggregating vacations, mental health days, sick time, holidays, and other personal days into one category called “Paid Time Off” or something similar, detailed explanations about the reasons for not being at work may not matter as much. But showing up regularly still does.

Be sure and look for a subsequent Staffing Talk post about a woman who got hired, got sick (very sick in fact) and got fired. It’s an interesting case study.

10) Drug and/or alcohol abuse

Obviously drug and alcohol issues can leads to all kinds of problems in the workplace, such as inconsistent work, errors, accidents, poor interpersonal relationships, increased absenteeism, low morale and so on. It’s bad for the company and bad for the worker. When these problems come up, they certainly transcend the workplace, and losing a job may not be the biggest problem.

That’s our list. It’s fairly comprehensive, but we wouldn’t assume it’s complete. Did we make any obvious errors or omissions? Let us know your thoughts and comments, including perhaps a difficult firing decision you have had to face.

There are competitors I fear. Some I loathe. Others I ignore.

And then there are those like Linkedin that I don’t even realize play in my market until one day out of the blue they’ve come in and eaten some of my lunch.

Getting lunch-eatened isn’t fun although one advantage is it leaves you hungrier than you would otherwise have been, and in the software business that means you’re out looking really hard at what that competitor does that’s special.

So what is it that Linkedin is doing so well that it threatens not just the staffing software business but the recruitment market as a whole including staffing companies, job boards, and other online profile services?

Certainly it’s not the inbox flooding service. Nor the moronic groups feature that has given junior sales people a company-sanctioned way to avoid making calls to clients and prospects. Nope, not those.

I postulate that what Linkedin has done so well is make people look good, and by good I mean professional, organized and attractive. Click on someone’s Linkedin profile and even if they’re the paunchy, unshaven worse-than-a-hung-over-Russell-Crowe slob that got fired for absenteeism a year ago, they still look good on Linkedin.

As a software guy, I look at that profile, and by the way the profile looks great everywhere from the desktop to the iPad to the Android, and ask myself how’d they do it? And how do they make that profile pop up so quickly as well?

The Secret

The secret to Linkedin’s success lies in an almost unparalleled devotion to design, the latest iteration of which has everything to do with HTML5 and in particular an often overlooked aspect of HTML5 called client-side scripting.

Client-side scripting is the web’s way of making browsers super-fast by rendering the display right on the device you’re using. This contrasts with older, slower server-side scripting that required a round trip to the site’s server every time you wanted to see something different.

Now the reality is that every innovative software company out there is getting into HTML5 in a big way and client-side scripting has been around since Brendan Eich developed javascript last century, but as with every fast-evolving innovation, not all client-side scripting is alike.

In fact if you dig into it as I tend to on almost a full time basis, you see subcultures of competition as tenacious if not vicious as anything you’ll see on Super Bowl commercials this weekend.

Linkedin has definitely been at the forefront of this, having adopted what was a discarded open source client-side templating project called Dustjs and forked it for their own use.

One key aspect of Dustjs is i18n, a feature that allows the client-side scripts to work regardless of the international context (Chinese, right-to-left writing, etc). By the way, can you guess how i18n got its name given its ability to deal with i-n-t-e-r-n-a-t-i-o-n-a-l-i-z-a-t-i-o-n?

Summary

Despite Linkedin’s success with Dustj I’m not convinced it was the best decision for the long haul. As of now Linkedin is left to develop it on its own, meanwhile a powerful, wide-ranging set of forces are aligning behind open source client-side scripting platforms like Ember and Knockout while others are pursuing proprietary, well-supported products i.e. KendoUI and Sencha.

Guessing who will win out in this bataille royale is like guessing in 1903 who would become the largest automobile manufacturer.

My personal favorite is Knockout, in part because they’ve made it exceptionally easy to learn. And often it’s not the product with the most features but the one that is easiest that wins out.

If you’ve got a 15-year-old kid as I do and you want them a guaranteed job in a few years, ditch the idea of paying for a $250k university degree and having them beg for a barista job somewhere.

Just have them learn Knockout. They’ll be a hot commodity. And, as Alfred and the Drunkards sang in My Fair Lady, With a little bit o’luck, With a little bit o’ luck, They‘ll go out and start supportin’ you!

After our “where to put your next branch office” post attracted lots of readers this week, including at least one from Mongolia as we found out in the comments, we thought we would follow with the 25 best cities in the U.S. when it comes to jobs.

Okay, let’s get one thing established right away. No area of the country is experiencing explosive growth at the moment. And even those that are doing better than most, are cautious in their optimism.

Things are better than they were though. Between 2009 and 2010, only 13 of 397 metropolitan areas experienced any growth at all.

Now, many areas are reporting actual employment increases — even if they are modest.

NewGeography.com is a site devoted to analyzing and discussing the places where we live and work. In a recent piece on best cities for jobs they ranked all 398 current metropolitan statistical areas, based on employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported from November 1999 to January 2011.

They also also broke down rankings by size — small, medium and large — since regional economies differ markedly due to their scale.

“Once again the best places for jobs tended to be smaller communities where incremental improvements can have a relatively large impact,” stated the article. “Eighteen of the top 20 cities on our list were either small (under 150,000 nonfarm jobs) or mid-sized areas (less than 450,000 jobs).”

“Once again the best places for jobs tended to be smaller communities where incremental improvements can have a relatively large impact. Eighteen of the top 20 cities on our list were either small (under 150,000 nonfarm jobs) or mid-sized areas (less than 450,000 jobs).”

In my research I checked a lot of these types of lists, dating back a year or so ago. While there are some differences, one thing is clear. Rick Perry is right. When it comes to jobs, Texas is tops.

On the NewGeography site the Lone Star State dominated the three size categories, with the No. 1 mid-sized city, El Paso (No. 3 overall, up 22 places from last year) and No.1 large metropolitan area Austin (No. 6 overall), joining Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood (the No. 1 small city) atop their respective lists.

Texas also produced three other of the top 10 smallest regions, including energy-dominated No. 4 Midland, which gained 41 places overall, and No. 10 Odessa, whose economy jumped a remarkable 57 places. It also added two other mid-size cities to its belt: No. 2 Corpus Christi and No. 4 McAllen-Edinburgh-Mission.

In a September article in Forbes you can read here, they said San Antionio, Texas is the “metropolitan area with the most optimistic forecast for hiring.”

Richard Perez, head of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, says the cost of living is low, and the talent pool is well educated and plentiful, with area colleges putting 30,000 grads into circulation every year.

Of course, many have argued, even during recent preidential debates, that Texas doesn’t have any secret sauce when it comes to job creation, it just has to do with oil.

Of course, many have argued, even during recent presidential debates, that Texas doesn’t have any secret sauce when it comes to job creation, it just has to do with oil.

Giving some credence to that is other oil capitals are doing well when it comes to jobs. The No. 2 small metro and the No. 2 overall, Bismarck, N.D., is the emerging capital of the expanding Dakota energy belt. Also faring well are Alaska’s two oil-fire cities, Fairbanks (No. 10 on our small list) and Anchorage (No. 3 on the medium-sized list).

As for areas exhibiting “suprising” growth in the eyes of NewGeography, New Orleans was cited specifically. It moved up 46 places from a year ago to capture the No. 2 slot among large metros. The region lost 11% of its population and nearly 16% of its jobs during the last decade. However, continued rebuilding in the hurricane aftermath, a growing immigrant population and a rise in tourism are all contributing to growth.

Here is the NewGeography list of the Top 25 overall best cities for job growth.

Whether you’re pitching your services to a potential client or coaching a candidate on interview strategies, your interviewer will likely get very similar plugs from your competitors.

To rise above the noise, you need to make what you say more memorable than all the other pitches and candidate interviews your audience will hear.

A key strategy: Tell stories.

“People are natural-born storytellers, and from a very early age they interpret what’s happening to them in their lives through stories,” said Kathryn Rentz, an English professor at the University of Cincinnati.

“Humans continue to use narrative their whole lives, not just to try to explain or convince or justify, but also to understand: What happened? What will happen?”

In business, narratives can be overlooked in favor of metrics and data.

“Storytelling can seem on the face of it to be something frivolous and not terribly relevant,” Rentz said. “But it turns out narrative can be useful in a workplace setting in all kinds of ways.”

One reason is that when you tell a story, you tend to include a lot of concrete detail.

“I think narratives are compelling because they invite people to imagine themselves or other characters in a specific situation,” Rentz said.

In the staffing business, there are several ways to use storytelling to boost your business:

Coach candidates to tell stories in job interviews.

Candidates will tell you they’re hard workers and fast learners. But as Shelley Seibolt of Staffing Kansas City said, “Who cares? That could be anybody.”

Seibolt, whose Overland Park, Kan., firm places mostly contract-to-hire and permanent workers in office support jobs, tells candidates she works with to think of five adjectives that describe them and their work – and then think of an anecdote that illustrates each one.

“If you really believe you’re a punctual person, make an anecdote about it: ‘I didn’t miss one day of work in 2010, so they gave me two extra weeks of vacation,’” Seibolt said.

You may need to help candidates through this process, offering examples and helping them judge which stories will best illustrate their points.

“A lot of people in the staffing industry, they tell candidates to do this and they don’t tell them how to do it,” said Jeff Skrentny, owner of Chicago-based Jefferson Group Search and Jefferson Group Consulting, which provides training in staffing and search.

“You need to coach them.”

Skrentny advises having candidates think of a problem they faced at work, the action they took to resolve it, and the result of that action.

The problem and solution should illustrate specific qualities that the candidate wants to emphasize. Then build a narrative based on those points.

It’s also important to know when to tell these stories in the interview. In some cases, interviewers use a behavioral interviewing model – in which they try to draw out stories about the candidate’s past experience – and that will give the candidate a cue to use an anecdote.

In other cases, the candidate will need to learn how to tell the stories as part of the answer to standard interview questions.

Tell stories on sales calls.

You can use stories to sell your own services, as well. When you’re pitching your company to a potential client, don’t just tell the client you’ll do a good job: Use stories showing how you have solved similar problems for past clients.

Getting written testimonials from former clients can help. For an in-person meeting, you may want to tell most of the story in your own words, using just a few quotes from the client.

“If you say you’re good at something, I would call that bragging,” Skrentny said. “If someone else says you’re good at helping them, that’s a testimonial.”

Many staffing firms’ pitches sound the same, Skrentny said. The stories that show specifically how you helped a client will make a stronger impression and stick in the client’s mind better than a list of adjectives saying you’re hard-working or series of metrics that show you have a high success rate.

Ask others to tell you stories, and listen carefully.

Knowing how to listen to a story is just as important as knowing how to tell one.

When Elise Lewis of Los Angeles-based Distinguished Domestic Services is interviewing potential clients, she asks them to tell her about the last person in this position – and why they left. Her firm places household staff members in private homes.

“It gives us a good impression of the client,” she said. “When they go on and on and tell you how nice they are, it’s usually just the opposite – that’s the house where people aren’t even allowed to drink their water.”

Lewis listens for subtle cues that the potential clients are not telling her the whole story. Sometimes the tone of voice may make her wonder, and other times it’s details that don’t add up or a story that just doesn’t explain why someone behaved the way they did. “You can tell when someone’s not being forthright,” Lewis said.

No matter how you are using narratives to advance your goals, experts advise keeping certain tips in mind:

Tell the truth. A “story” in this context does not mean fiction. You want to be absolutely accurate, so if the interviewer repeats the story to, for example, someone who is acting as a candidate’s reference, that person doesn’t contradict it.

Be positive. Because stories are powerful, a bad one can send a strong negative message. If you’re telling a story about something that went wrong, “you don’t ever want to try to blame it on anyone else,” Seibolt said.

Be brief. Stories should not go on and on, and their point should be clear. “Don’t take more than 45 seconds to a minute and a half,” Seibolt said.

Practice, practice, practice. The anecdotes you use – whether you’re selling your company’s services or your own skills – need to be on the tip of your tongue. “That’s the big thing, being able to pull them up quickly,” Seibolt said. “You’ve already done the introspection.”

Practice will also help you hone the stories so they are interesting and on point. “They’re memorized, they’re fun and interesting and dynamic – and they allow someone to see a real-world example” of your work,” Skrentny said.

Consider using numbers or humor. Not all stories are funny or filled with numbers, and you shouldn’t force it. But both are effective strategies for making stories memorable, when you have the appropriate material.

Seibolt remembers one effective candidate whose anecdotes included numbers showing how he had improved sales at a store he had managed. “That’s really cool to be able to have quantitative examples of success,” she said.

Likewise, humor makes for a memorable story – and it paints you as someone who would be fun to work with. “If you get a prospect laughing, they will listen, and if they listen, they will hear how you can make a difference,” Skrentny said.
